Japan and Thailand have agreed to work on a framework to help Japanese automakers make and sell electric vehicles in Thailand.

Thailand's Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin was in Japan for a summit to mark 50 years of friendship and cooperation between Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

His counterpart, Kishida Fumio, asked for support for Japanese carmakers operating in Thailand. Srettha agreed to offer assistance and consider setting up formal talks.

To spur mutual investment, Srettha added that his government has decided to waive visa requirements for short business trips by Japanese citizens.

Foreign Ministry officials say the visa waiver will start in January for visits of up to 30 days.
