Cambodia and Laos will further build a new border checkpoint to facilitate cross-border trade, tourism, transportat and people-to-people connectivity between the two neighbours.

The plan was revealed during a recent bilateral meeting between Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, and H.E. Dr. Sonexay Siphandone, Prime Minister of the Lao PDR, according to a news release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation issued at the end of the two-day official visit of H.E. Dr. Sonexay Siphandone to Cambodia on Dec. 5.
“The two Prime Ministers reiterated their commitment to encourage the competent authorities of the two countries to study the possibility of the establishment of a new border checkpoint,” added the source, pointing out that the new border checkpoint is expected to build between Rattanakiri province of Cambodia and Attapeu province of Lao PDR.
Moreover, the two Prime Ministers encouraged the ministries and authorities concerned of both sides to expedite site selection for building bridge crossing the Tonle Ropou in Preah Vihear province of Cambodia – Selampao river in Champasak province of Laos as soon as possible.
The two leaders strongly believed that the bridge will contribute to facilitating transport, trade, investment tourism and people-to-people connectivity between the two countries, as well as the connectivity in the Greater Mekong Subregion.
Cambodia and Laos shared a common border of 540 kilometres.
