Naval athletes from nine countries began four days of high-stakes competition on Sunday as the 54th CISM World Military Naval Pentathlon Championship opened in central China's Wuhan, testing combat skills across five demanding events.

The four-day program will see teams from nine nations -- China, South Africa, Brazil, Cambodia, Spain, Iran, Italy, Pakistan and Russia -- battle through obstacle crossing, life-saving swimming, utility swimming, seamanship and amphibious cross-country. Observers from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Myanmar are also in attendance.

The naval pentathlon is one of the flagship events on the CISM calendar, a unique blend of strength, skill and service-specific tasks. The current competition standards replicate real operational scenarios such as amphibious landings, shipboard operations and open-sea rescue, putting core naval proficiencies to the test.

"Hosting this competition deepens friendly exchange with foreign militaries, fosters international cooperation in military sport and spurs innovation in military physical training. Sailors from different navies meet through sport, build mutual understanding in fair competition, forge lasting friendships and together advance the naval pentathlon," said Yan Zhiyong, deputy head of the competition Organizing group.
