PHNOM PENH – Interest in travel to Cambodia has skyrocketed following the announcement of a new visa-free entry policy for Chinese citizens. Tongcheng Travel, a leading travel service provider, reports that flight searches from major Chinese cities to Cambodia more than doubled (+100%) immediately following the news.
Policy Drives Immediate Demand According to an official letter released by the Cambodian government on Tuesday, the country will implement a trial visa-free policy for Chinese nationals for a four-month period, running from June 15 to October 15 of next year.
The market reaction was instantaneous. From Tuesday to Wednesday morning, Tongcheng Travel data showed a greater than 100 percent increase in searches for popular routes from China to Cambodia compared to the previous period.
Surging Interest Meets Strategic Timing The timing of the visa-free trial is strategically aligned with peak travel seasons. The Tongcheng Research Institute notes that the trial period (June–October) coincides perfectly with China’s summer travel peak and the National Day "Golden Week" holiday.
"We expect travel enthusiasm for Cambodia to reach new heights during these specific periods next year," a representative from the Tongcheng Research Institute stated. "The removal of visa barriers during peak holiday seasons is a significant catalyst for leisure travel."
Upcoming Year-End Travel Trends While the visa-free policy targets next year, immediate movement is also expected. With many Chinese workers currently in Cambodia preparing to return home for the year-end, flights from Cambodia to key Chinese hubs—specifically Chengdu, Nanning, and Guangzhou—are projected to see a significant surge in bookings in the coming weeks.
