PHNOM PENH, Cambodia - The Cambodian Ministry of Commerce (MoC) is actively aggressively pursuing a strategy to elevate the quality of local products to meet European Union (EU) standards. This move is designed to boost export volumes, diversify markets, and prepare the nation for its graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status in 2029.
The Key Strategic Objectives are the Alignment with EU standards, its primary goal is to increase the processing quality of local goods to match strict EU regulations, ensuring Cambodian products remain competitive and accessible. Market Intelligent, The MoC is collaborating with over 400 companies in the EU to gather data on consumer demands, competitors, and the overall business environment. And Market Diversification, Secretary of State Samheng Bora emphasized the need to recognize that different EU member countries have distinct market demands, requiring a diversified export approach.
To facilitate this quality transition, the MOC has partnered with the EU-German Global Access and Trade Expertise (EU-German GATE) Team. The focus of this collaboration; such as, Setting and adopting EU-quality standards, Implementing these standards across various product lines and Ensuring local enterprises comply with complex international trade rules to maintain market access.
Despite the high regulatory bar, trade between Cambodia and the EU is seeing significant growth. The primary exports products are Textiles, footwear, bicycles, milled rice, and agricultural products.
A major driver for this initiative is Cambodia’s upcoming graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status, scheduled for 2029.
