PHNOM PENH, Cambodia - White House spokeswoman Kelly issued a statement on Saturday, clarifying President Donald Trump's position on the ongoing border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand following his diplomatic intervention on Friday.

Despite President Trump's efforts to mediate and de-escalate the situation, border clashes intensified over the weekend. The White House statement emphasized that President Trump "wants all parties to fully implement the commitments made in the peace agreement and will hold those responsible accountable if necessary to stop the killing and ensure lasting peace."

On Friday, President Trump spoke separately with the leaders of Cambodia and Thailand. He later posted on the social media platform Truth Social, claiming that the two leaders had "agreed to cease all fighting that evening and return to the original peace agreement reached with his assistance and that of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim."

In his post, Trump also suggested that the initial casualty-causing incident—a "roadside bomb" involving Thai soldiers—was "an accident," though he noted Thailand still responded with a "very strong" response.

However, Thai forces reportedly continued shelling Cambodian positions across multiple border directions even after the call, further expanding the scope of the attack and keeping the border situation tense.

Some analysts point out that Anutin's statement suggests that, under domestic political considerations, he may be intentionally using the nationalist sentiments fueled by the military conflict to gain political support and votes.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet issued a statement at 4 a.m. on the 13th, reporting on his phone call with US President Trump. He emphasized that Cambodia has always insisted on resolving disputes peacefully and suggested that relevant US and Malaysian agencies retrieve satellite imagery data from the time of the incident and the following 24 hours to evidently verify which side fired first.
