An intermodal transport center on the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor saw the start of its construction in Fangchenggang City of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on Wednesday, with the ambitious project expected to significantly promote regional connectivity.
With a total investment of 430 million yuan (around 58.92 million U.S. dollars), the center covers an area of 12.8 hectares, and its total track laying length will reach 2.3 kilometers. The first phase of the project is expected to be delivered and go into operation by 2026.
Formed with dedicated railways, container yards, warehouses and other support facilities and equipment, the center will be capable of operating freight train services, and carrying out bulk cargo storage and handling, as well as container packing and unpacking.
Operation of the center will facilitate the transport of various types of cargo, including grains, non-ferrous metal ores and fertilizers, among others. It is expected that the annual transshipment service capacity of the center will reach 7.5 million tons, with a daily cargo distribution capacity of 20,000 tons.
The New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor was jointly built by provincial-level regions in western China and ASEAN members. It has expanded its reach to 490 ports across 120 countries and regions, according to data released in January by southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, the corridor's operational hub.
This trade corridor connects global ports via railways, sea routes and highways through southern Chinese provincial-level regions such as Guangxi and Yunnan.
