US President Donald Trump is reportedly attempting to leverage the upcoming 47th ASEAN Summit in Malaysia to preside over a ceremonial signing of a peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand. The White House is said to have made the arrangement a condition for the President's attendance at the high-profile regional meeting.
The 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits are scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from October 26 to 28, 2025. The summit serves as the premier annual gathering where regional leaders will meet to chart strategic directions for deeper economic integration, strengthen political-security cooperation, promote inclusive and sustainable development, and engage with external partners on major global challenges.
American political news outlet Politico reported, citing three anonymous sources familiar with the plan, that the White House has informed Malaysian officials that President Trump is willing to attend the summit only if he is permitted to oversee the ceremonial peace deal signing on the sidelines of the regional meeting. While the White House has denied that his participation is strictly conditional, the request highlights the administration's focus on the issue.
If approved, the event would provide President Trump with a significant international platform to showcase his credentials as a "peacemaker-in-chief." The move aims to highlight what he has described as his decisive role in ending a deadly five-day border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand in July. The ceasefire, which took effect on July 28, was brokered with the intervention of President Trump—who reportedly threatened to suspend trade negotiations with both nations—along with active participation from China and coordination from Malaysia. The agreement was widely seen as a turning point in easing tensions along the contested frontier, saving lives and providing a path to restoring bilateral relations.
The reported request for the ceremony coincides with an earlier diplomatic effort by Phnom Penh to credit the U.S. President. In August, Cambodia officially nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his pivotal role in defusing the recent hostilities along the border. In a formal letter addressed to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Prime Minister Hun Manet praised Trump’s "extraordinary statesmanship" and credited him for brokering an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, an intervention the Cambodian leader said had "averted a potentially devastating conflict."
