Siem Reap, Cambodia’s cultural capital, has been named one of the world’s top destinations for 2026 by global travel authority Lonely Planet, reinforcing the Kingdom’s growing stature as a leading cultural and tourism hub. The annual ‘Best in Travel 2026’ list, released on Wednesday, features 50 destinations and experiences expected to inspire travelers. Siem Reap joins 24 other places, including Sardinia, Italy, and Maine, USA. The list celebrates locations chosen by Lonely Planet’s network of writers and editors for their cultural richness, sustainability, and capacity to deliver meaningful travel experiences.
Siem Reap’s inclusion acknowledges its transformation into a modern destination. While the Angkor Archaeological Park remains a global icon, the city has evolved with boutique hotels, art galleries, and a growing culinary movement, blending ancient heritage with an emerging creative scene. The city appears alongside other top Asian entries, such as Jeju-do in South Korea and Phuket in Thailand. Additionally, Lonely Planet recognized the Mekong River Cruise between Cambodia and Vietnam as a top world experience.
Tourism operators welcomed the global spotlight, noting it supports Cambodia’s long-term goal of promoting sustainable and high-value tourism. This recognition reflects government efforts to diversify attractions beyond Angkor Wat and develop new experiences to encourage longer stays. The announcement follows major upgrades in Siem Reap, including a new international airport and improved infrastructure, with a focus on green and creative tourism. Local businesses are also emphasizing community-based activities, countryside tours, and traditional cuisine to meet the demand for authentic travel.
This global acknowledgment is expected to bring greater international attention to the province’s diverse and emerging attractions, supporting a strategy to strengthen Cambodia’s image as an authentic and sustainable destination.
